Azzarello & Chiang on Wonder Woman
Details are being announced today on the new creative teams and let’s start with Wonder Woman. The new team is Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang. The artist I am thrilled with. I need to think about Azzarello. I had hoped for Grant Morrison but I was told that was not happening earlier this week. Look at this art.
One of the first things reported that I’m kinda happy with, Azzarello wrote two of my favorite Superman comics. I really like his approach to characters.
WOW! OK, so Brian Azzarello is an amazing writer. This is GOOD.
BUT BUT BUT here’s the thing — if you’ve read his Joker graphic novel, it contained two women: Harley Quinn and the ex-wife of Joker’s new henchman. Azzarello made HQ (whose personality is very gabby) MUTE and fridged the ex-wife when Joker raped her in order to get to his henchman. There were two women as well in Lex Luthor: Man of Steel, but I honestly can’t remember how strong their portrayals were.

I am giving the side-eye to the people trying to argue that putting women in pants is sexist, though. Yeah, get back to me with that arguement when Clark and Bruce are running around flashing their panties on a regular basis.
Dear god, fishnets, please be gone. Fishnets aren’t pants, right?
When it comes to Diana, I’d still prefer pteruges to pants, but I’ll roll my eyes at anyone lamenting the bathing suit on principle. That design never made sense for her.
As for Supergirl et al getting pants? Fuck yeah.
You can bet that dudes are lamenting this at CBR. Yeah. (That thread has some pretty gross comments, so. :/)

Read Johns and Lee spill the beans about yesterday’s universe changing news from DC Comics HERE.
While most of the creators and books to hit shelves in September are still “hush-hush”, CBR has a list of some of the books we will be seeing:
A new title starring Superman written by Grant Morrison.
Birds of Prey #1 - This new ongoing series will not feature the work of longtime “BoP” writer Gail Simone. In fact, many tried and true approaches to books will be getting a second look at DC in September.
Teen Titans #1 - The new start for the teen team will be written by “Red Robin” scribe Fabian Nicieza.
Justice Society of America #1 - Only one of a number of current titles that will welcome a creative team shift, the future of the original superhero team will apparently not involve current writer Marc Guggenheim.
Wonder Woman #1 - Don’t expect the recent changes from writer J. Michael Straczynski to stick when the Amazing Amazon sees another new #1 hit.
Green Lantern #1 - Even with a new #1, Green Lantern remains in Johns’ hands, and readers can expect the effects of major crossovers like “Blackest Night” to stay in place moving forward.
Hawkman #1 - While fans have known a “Hawkman” series by James Robinson has been in the works since the writer mentioned it on a panel at New York Comic Con, Bleeding Cool’s Rich Johnston has been reporting the rumor that the book will be drawn by “Batman & Robin” and “Outsiders” artist Philip Tan.
Aquaman #1 - No surprises here. The already announced series featuring the sea king by Johns and Ivan Reis will be part of the relaunch wave.
This list gives us some clues to the type of DCU we’ll be seeing. Looking forward to see what other details emerge today…

Don’t believe anything based on a unsubstantiated comic book web-site “reporting,” since often what you’re reading is just a big game of internet telephone (this site said this, then another site picked it up and butchered parts of it, then a 3rd site picked it up from the 2nd site and butchered it further, etc.)
Prime example: I am not writing Teen Titans.
So then, don’t believe anything specific until you hear it specifically from a verified DC source.

The last reboot gave us this retcon — which wasn’t very much liked — and Jason’s origin reboot, which wasn’t liked at the time, but seriously, readers back then, what the hell? How could you not love a kid who stole the tires off the Batmobile? What is not to love?!?!
