M is for Mia Dearden the kick ass sidekick to Green Arrow. Nicknamed Speedy, Mia is former teen prostitute who left her life on the street to become Oliver Queen’s ward. Mia is one of the few HIV-positive characters in comics. Mia is a expert archer and has also trained in martial arts. She is currently slated to appear in the new Green Arrow.

I took an instant liking to Mia Dearden as soon as I started reading about her. She’s funny, crass, obnoxious, cool, smart and probably knows about a billion dirty jokes. She was created by Kevin Smith, so goshdarnit she should know that many dirty jokes!
Judd Winick has often gotten a bad rap for making Mia HIV-positive. When she was created by Kevin Smith, she was a prostitute and one who had been sexually abused/raped by her boyfriend/pimp and by her father. Ollie Queen took her in as his ward and, under Winick’s pen, she found out she had HIV.
Many fans have claimed that Judd was pushing an agenda with this (read “gay” agenda here) and that it was simply an “afternoon special” instance. This is because Judd had personal experience with a close friend (Pedro) who died of AIDS. Mia’s HIV status is what fueled her to become Speedy and she has had numerous issues with disclosure (even just to kiss someone). Unlike other superheroes, the Arrows and the Bats are the more mortal heroes. Barbara is in a wheelchair for the rest of her life; Mia has HIV for the rest of her life.
Honestly, the claims that Judd was pushing an agenda with this usually smack of homophobia, in my humble opinion. But anyone who wants to suggest otherwise, I’d love to hear what you have to say. :-)
