BREAKING: Virginia Personhood Bill Officially Dead
I’m not American, but I really think that now is the time to start organizing a national protest against the erosion of women’s rights. It wasn’t until after this bill caught national media attention and a silent protest was held that the governor offered an amendment to the bill and actually realised that it is unconstitutional.
On February 23, 2012, a Conservative anti-abortion activist said no one would even notice if Roe v. Wade was overturned. From ThinkProgress.org:
“I think there is a universal understanding among the legal community that Roe v. Wade was a very flawed legal decision,” she said. “It’s a horrible decision from a constitutional law standpoint, and even liberal law professors will tell you that.
“I believe that the issue of abortion should be left to the people to decide. The Constitution doesn’t mention the word abortion. So I think that’s what it’s really all about. And if Roe v. Wade were overturned tomorrow, nobody would even notice, because the states are legislating their own laws about abortion, completely independent.”
Even though I don’t live in the U.S., I have friends and family who do, and this is really disconcerting to me to see other women and their rights being treated in this way. If a national protest ever does happen — which I sincerely hope it does — I will gladly gather up my girlfriends and march in solidarity in Toronto.
